During his early years in New York, Anthony Bourdain frequently visited Manhattan’s Lower East Side. In fact, it was featured in the final episode of CNN's Parts Unknown, filmed in April 2018, just two months before he died in a hotel in France.

There is no better person to understand Bourdain's history with the Lower East Side than Harley Flanagan, founder of Cro-Mags, the legendary New York hardcore punk band, and author of Hard-Core: Life of My Own.

Flanagan reflects on the many parallels he shared with Bourdain from their individual experiences in New York City during the 1970s as artists (Bourdain, the storyteller; Flanagan, the musician) to their challenges with drug addictions and how they channeled their unmistakable energy into Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
